February 25, 2019When It Rains In Life, You Need Your Wipers: Why Counseling Is Important To You

Counseling?! Is it us? Is there something wrong with us? Are we being overly dramatic?
It’s likely that none of us like driving in the rain, especially a hard rain that makes seeing in front of us nearly impossible. The rain is torrential. The road is a blur. The guy who just passed us going 80mph seems to have no problem though.
Is it us? Is there something wrong with us? Are we being overly dramatic? Quickly we scan for other cars on the road to gauge the speed of their windshield wipers to ours. Then comes that fantastic moment when we pass someone hunched over their wheel, squinting at the road ahead, and their wipers are going the same speed — maybe even faster than ours!
We weren’t being silly or dramatic, and it was completely sensible to slow our speed and use the help of wipers. There’s a certain relief in knowing that what you’re going through is valid, experienced by others and that it’s normal to use whatever tools available to improve the situation. Most of us are not made for careening down the highway of life without a care, energy drink in hand, music blaring, and the wipers idling impotently as rain pelts us.
There are those who are satisfied to sit still under a bridge, idling at the side of the road, just waiting out the storm. No need for wipers, they have all the time in the world. As wonderful as that may be, some of us have places to be and stopping completely isn’t an option.
That’s when it’s nice to know there are others on the road beside us, our wipers still swishing quickly, our eyes trained on the road ahead, and our hearts somehow more settled because we know we’re not in it alone. Someone else feels anxious, depressed, angry all the time, tired and defeated, just like we do. They’ve switched on their wipers, they’ve gotten help, and now they’re on the road with us — charging ahead at varying speeds with whatever tools they need to get through it.
You’re not alone. There are others who are going through it too, and that’s why we’re here — to help you through the downpours of life.
